The Death of Alexander is een dystopische film uit 2022, geregisseerd door Matthew Libatique en geschreven door Sophie Harper. Het sterren Ben Foster en beschikt over Idris Elba, David Oyelowo en Tessa Thompson.
De film draait om Willem Alexander, een lage regeringsfunctionaris en de enige politicus in de Verenigde Staten die afwezig was bij de verkiezingen in zijn land. In een poging zijn land te redden van een oplevende Sovjet-Unie, wordt hij naar een afgelegen locatie gestuurd, een nieuw gestichte kolonie in een afgelegen deel van de wereld dat de Verenigde Staten van Amerika wordt genoemd. Hij krijgt de opdracht om toezicht te houden op de aanleg van een spoorlijn, die door twee Amerikaanse functionarissen zal worden aangelegd. Hij wordt echter al snel onderworpen aan een aantal duistere geheimen die worden onthuld door een lokale overheidsfunctionaris die heeft geprobeerd de bouw te stoppen. Omdat ze de trein niet kunnen stoppen, moeten de twee agentschappen samenwerken om de mensen in de trein te stoppen en ze te redden van een zekere vernietiging.
De film is een bewerking van een roman van Astrid Lindgren, “Het lelijkste ding in de wereld is de wereld die het niet kan begrijpen.”. De film is opgenomen in de Badlands van South Dakota, het noordelijke deel van de staat. De titel van de film is een verwijzing naar de titel van het nummer van Philip Glass, “Oh, what a man I am”, waarmee de film wordt geopend.
De film ging in première op het 90e Internationale Filmfestival van Berlijn op 20 februari 2022. Het werd op 19 maart 2022 in de bioscoop uitgebracht in de Verenigde Staten, in RealD 3D en in IMAX 3D. De film heeft een brutowinst van $ 7.500.000 in de Verenigde Staten, de meest winstgevende film van het jaar.
De film werd uitgebracht in het Verenigd Koninkrijk op 24 maart 2022, in verschillende internationale gebieden op 17 april 2022 en in bepaalde landen op 4 mei 2022.
Verhaal
In een dystopische, vereeuwigde toekomst ergens in de 19e eeuw, is Willem Alexander een lage overheidsfunctionaris die vaak dient als een held uit de middenklasse, afgeschilderd als een vriendelijke, liefdevolle en toegewijde vriend voor de armen. Op een dag, kort voordat hij wordt ontslagen, krijgt hij het bericht dat hij zal worden vermoord. Hij krijgt te horen dat zijn toespraak voor het parlement twee dagen eerder is opgenomen en dat de opname moet worden vernietigd. Zijn taak is om naar de staatsomroep te gaan om uit te zoeken wat er aan de hand is. Tijdens zijn zoektocht ontdekt hij echter dat de staatsomroep eigenlijk een complot is.
Ondertussen lanceren de samenzweerders een plan om Lord Londonderry, de toenmalige leider van het land, een doodvonnis te laten ondertekenen voor zijn broer, de koning. De samenzweerders zijn van plan het doodvonnis te gebruiken als voorwendsel om de koning te vermoorden. Het plan is succesvol en Lord Londonderry wordt gedood. Willem krijgt dan de leiding over de nieuw gevormde staatsomroep, die onder controle staat van de samenzweerders.
Willem realiseert zich al snel dat de operatie van de staatsomroep een vals dekmantel is voor een groter complot. Hij komt er ook achter dat de samenzweerders willen dat hij hun leider wordt. Hij wordt door de samenzweerders tot zondebok gemaakt en wordt gedwongen als boodschapper te werken tussen de samenzweerders en de bevolking van het land.
Willem besluit vervolgens de staatsomroep te vermoorden, met de hulp van een mede-samenzweerder, die ook een nationale held is. De twee mannen verlaten de staatsomroep om de opname te vinden. Ze slagen erin om de opname te vinden, maar wanneer ze deze openen, realiseren ze zich dat de opname het resultaat is van een valse vlag operatie door de samenzweerders. Ze vangen de samenzweerders en doden ze.
Nadat Willem is ontsnapt, beginnen de rest van de samenzweerders een plan te smeden om hem te vermoorden. Ze slagen er uiteindelijk in om hem te doden. Als de opname wordt afgespeeld, is het duidelijk dat er op hem wordt geschoten. Terwijl hij op sterven ligt, legt hij uit waarom de dossiers niet van hem waren, maar van de overheid. Hij legt uit: “Ik ben altijd een man van mijn woord geweest.” Meer dan wat dan ook.
In de laatste scènes van de film is te zien hoe de regeringspolitie naar hem zoekt, en de film eindigt met de camera die langzaam het lichaam van Alexander laat zien.

De film werd over het algemeen goed ontvangen door critici. Op Rotten Tomatoes heeft de film een goedkeuringsscore van 75% op basis van 13 beoordelingen, met een gemiddelde beoordeling van 8,7/10. Op Metacritic heeft de film een score van 78 op 100 gebaseerd op 7 critici, wat wijst op “universele bijval”.
Hoewel een succes in de Verenigde Staten, werd de film bekritiseerd vanwege zijn tactieken onder de tafel, zoals het gebruik van valse identiteiten voor bepaalde personages en het gebruik van valse paspoorten om de echte identiteit van de personages te verhullen.
Vervolg
Na de succesvolle eerste-dagkassa van de film, begonnen de filmmakers met het ontwikkelen van een vervolg. Matthew Libatique werd aangetrokken als schrijver en regisseur om het vervolg op de film te regisseren. De producenten waren echter niet tevreden met de regie van het origineel, gaven de voorkeur aan een origineel scenario en waren op zoek naar een regisseur die de thema’s van de film op een originelere manier zou aanpakken.
